Written by Chas H. Allen and originally published in 1870, this book describes his travels in both Queensland and Victoria and touches on Sydney (the port at which he arrived), and New Zealand.

THIS small volume of notes on Australia has been compiled from letters written on the spot, and may be relied upon as a faithful description of the Colonies as I saw them. With scarcely any exception, every place and circumstance mentioned is from personal observation, and I have purposely omitted all account of Colonies which I did not actually visit. Circumstances led me to reside for several months of last year in Queensland, during which time I visited the celebrated Goldfields of Gympie Creek, not long after their discovery.

Though dealing largely with the goldfields of Gympie, the quartz reefs of Northern Queensland, gold mining in Ballarat, and the Port Phillip mining Company at Clunes, Allen also includes extensive descriptions of other aspects of the eastern colonies. There is a general chapter on Queensland and life there, with others on Brisbane and the Darling Downs, Rockhampton and the Fitzroy River. In Victoria, he discourses on Melbourne and his meeting with the botanist Dr Mueller, and a visit to Portland and Warrnambool. More general chapters cover the church in Australia and emigration.

He voyaged home to England via New Zealand, Panama, New York, Niagara, and Quebec and describes the passage and points of interest on the way.
