This telephone directory covers all of Tasmania and includes separate sections for the Hobart, Launceston and country exchanges. Listing thousands of names, addresses and telephone numbers for 1953, it arranged in a similar way to today’s telephone books.

Each section includes a list of people and companies together with their address and telephone number and are sorted alphabetically. The country section is sorted alphabetically by town. It also has separate business and government departments sections.

Information on call rates for both local and interstate calls, telegram costs, how to place a call or telegram using different phone types, postal rates, wireless licence information and general telephone information is also included.

This directory is a useful resource giving extra insight into the lives of those living in this era.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book, bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.

a fantastic reference point ,if you moved away from the city of your child hood . In my case the people concerned had married but had stayed in the family home so i already had an address ( thanks to goole earth) the old phone book had the address and a four digit phone number which by itself was useless anyway i worked out the code for the area and was able to contact one person who was able to furnish the other contact details
