Directories are a valuable (but under-used) resource for local, family and social historians as well as for researchers in other fields of Australian history.

The Sands Directory, one of Australia's well-known directories, was a residential and business directory for the City and Suburbs of Sydney, which was published between 1858 and 1932.

This 1902 edition, was it's 42nd year of publication. It is divided into three main sections, 'Street and Suburban Directory', 'Country Commercial and Alphabetical Directories', and 'Trades and Miscellaneous Directories'.

You will find information relating to houses, industries, schools, courts, institutions etc, space by space, listing the main occupant. You will also find the commercial and alphabetical directories which list persons together with their trade and address, and the miscellaneous sections, which contains information such as education, ecclesiastical, government and parliamentary, and various other information.

Directories are an extremely useful tool for establishing when and where a person lived, however this is just a starting point, look further in the directory to find out more information about the society in which they lived, the occupation they held and the people they knew.
