Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

Published once a week, this CD includes every issue that was released during 1868 for New South Wales. You will find information such as court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of arrests and discharges (which includes physical descriptions of each), escaped prisoners, and missing persons, as well as lists for numerous licences. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

SAMPLE ENTRIES:

Miscellaneous Information - 25 March 1868
The skeleton of a man has been found in the bush near Wakool Station, Deniliquin district; a pair of moleskin trousers, piece of a blue serge shirt, and a reversible drab coat with breast and side pockets, were found near the remains, which were interred by police. The skeleton appears to be that of an aged man, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, low receding forehead, a few grey hairs on top of skull, and sandy-coloured hair on lower jaw.

Deserting Wives and Families, Services, &c. - 15 July 1868
A warrant has been issued by the Sydney Bench for the arrest of Mary Ann Nichols, charged with deserting her male child, of about the age of 6 years, leaving the said child without means of support. She is about 26 or 27 years of age, medium height, dark brown hair, dark eyes, round features, fresh complexion, flashy appearance; dressed in black hat with narrow leaf, tweed mantle, and bluish print dress. The child is at the Benevolent Asylum.
