Wills, intestacies and probate records can provide information on families not found in other government records. Some ancestors may leave a will but many die intestate and their estate then needs to be administered by another party. Widows and spinsters may also leave a will. It is definitely worthwhile to check for probate records as there may be family clues such as the married name of daughters, the names of grandchildren, addresses, description of lands and other goods owned by the deceased. In some instances, there may be a very detailed inventory of everything owned by the deceased.
The Handy Guide includes New Zealand with centraslised records, and Australia where there is no central place to search. This Handy Guide provides ready access to the major places to look for each Australian State and Territory and in New Zealand. It includes links to the archival repositories where the records are held, or to digitised records and online indexes. Also included is a list of book for further reading.
