From 1639 through 1715, the Presbyterian cause in Scotland dominated political thought, particularly in the Lowland region, where the fight prevailed between followers of the Church of England and the Presbyterians. This fight was particularly intense between 1660 and 1688, when the state persecuted Presbyterians in the name of religious and political conformity. Those who adhered to the Presbyterian cause were known as Covenanters.
This is a history of the more vocal and radical of those Covenanters, providing both biographical and historical information. The chapters in particular relate to Scots exiled to England, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the Plantations. Of particular interest is the list of prisoners from the battle of Bothwell Bridge (22 June 1679) who were deported to America.
