Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the civil war which tore Scotland apart, the Jacobite rebellions, and the conquest of empire all produced a demand for firearms unique to the Scottish experience. The Scots needed a different type of firearm, and they decorated their weapons in a style unique to North Britain. And with empire came the increased demand for firearms to be used whenever Highland regiments might serve.
They took with them and used weapons which often were different from those produced in England. The Scottish firearm - with its elaborate and unique engraving and construction - has been of interest to scholars, collectors, and recreationists for many years.
Lin Robinson has done the most exhaustive study yet of Scottish firearms and has in particular pulled together exciting full-colour illustrations from museums and collectors.
