This reference work takes all of Great Britain as its subject, and seeks to identify and explain British surnames in great part according to their origin and use. Barber first looks at nicknames, clan and place names, official and trade names, and Christian and foreign names, before moving to Norse, Friesian, and Norman names.

The majority of the work which follows is an alphabetical listing of British names with their origin or meaning. All entries are brief, and the emphasis here is not upon an extended definition of the name, its origin, and subsequent use, but rather to identify where the name came from and what region of the British Isles it most reflects.

This CD-ROM, has been scanned from the 2nd enlarged edition originally published in 1903.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be browsed, enlarged and printed out if required. Please note, this CD is not searchable.
