What happened in Australia back in 1964? Most people aren't likely to remember.

Ron Williams has created this series to record the events that made news in Australia year-by-year. Each volume in the series describes the happenings that affected people, real people, and is designed to make you remember and wonder at things you'd forgotten or didn't know about. They're also designed to get the older (and younger) generations talking about the past to rediscover heritage that otherwise would be forgotten.

So what made news in 1964? You might be surprised. In 1964 HMAS Voyager, an Australian destroyer, was sunk in a collision with the air-craft carrier, Melbourne. Stamp collecting was disappearing as a hobby, wine was no longer plonk, and mothers were waging war on old-fashioned tuck-shops. (God bless them. The tuck-shops, not the mothers). The Beatle cult was angering some people. The TAB: to be or not to be? Can true Reds get fat? Did Billie Graham have lasting effects? Prostitution was proposed as a safety valve against rape. Judy Garland got bad Press in Melbourne and left Oz in a sulk.

Please note this book is filled with articles from the year, not photographs.

Born in 1964 is a most interesting and complete history of the sorts of things that would interest anyone who lived through those times. I bought it as a birthday present.
