The 'Victorian Year Book 1874' is full of statistical information about the colony of Victoria.
Containing nine sections: a Blue Book section, Finance, Population, Law and Crime, Interchange, Production, Accumulation, Vital Statistics, and a Religious, Moral and Intellectual Progress section, this is a great way to find out more about Victoria in this era, more the social history aspect of it all.
The "Table of Principal Events that occurred in 1874" makes for a fascinating reading, containing entries like:
- July 8 - Opening of the Castlemaine and Dunolly line of railway as far as Maryborough
- July 26 - Coggia's comet first seen in Victoria from Wilson's Promontory, Point Lonsdale, and the suburbs of Melbourne.
- Aug 1 - Extraordinary suicide of a boy six years of age, at Green Hill, Wodonga, by shooting himself through the heart. He had been accused of stealing a valueless pipe.
- Nov 21 - The Hon. J.G. Francis and family left for London in this ship 'Renown'.
- Dec 10 - Death of Mr W.P. Wilson, professor of mathematics at the Melbourne University.
- Dec 25 - Arrival of s.s, 'St. Osyth' from London after a run of 47 1/2 days from Plymouth.
