The 'Victorian Year Book 1874' is full of statistical information about the colony of Victoria.

Containing nine sections: a Blue Book section, Finance, Population, Law and Crime, Interchange, Production, Accumulation, Vital Statistics, and a Religious, Moral and Intellectual Progress section, this is a great way to find out more about Victoria in this era, more the social history aspect of it all.

The "Table of Principal Events that occurred in 1874" makes for a fascinating reading, containing entries like:

  • July 8 - Opening of the Castlemaine and Dunolly line of railway as far as Maryborough
  • July 26 - Coggia's comet first seen in Victoria from Wilson's Promontory, Point Lonsdale, and the suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Aug 1 - Extraordinary suicide of a boy six years of age, at Green Hill, Wodonga, by shooting himself through the heart. He had been accused of stealing a valueless pipe.
  • Nov 21 - The Hon. J.G. Francis and family left for London in this ship 'Renown'.
  • Dec 10 - Death of Mr W.P. Wilson, professor of mathematics at the Melbourne University.
  • Dec 25 - Arrival of s.s, 'St. Osyth' from London after a run of 47 1/2 days from Plymouth.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
