If you had family living in Victoria in 1880s, have you thought of looking at the Police Gazettes for information? These are a historian's goldmine of information. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes contain details and information that cannot be found anywhere else. Far from just listing those who were in the Police Force or those that were on the "wrong side" of the law, you will also find entries of missing persons, witnesses to crime, and victims of crime.

Of course you also get weekly information on housebreaking, robberies, arson, murders, inquests, lost horses and cattle, deserters, escaped prisoners and reports on those released ... as well as some information from interstate police gazettes. This contains images of all 53 issues of the Victoria Police Gazette for 1884.

See Police Gazette, 1883, p. 184.
WILLIAM BOURKE, alias Irwin, alias Captain Denovan, escaped lunatic. This man was seen at Waurn Ponds, near Pettavel, on the day on which the late Francis Beech was buried, but on the approach of two men he ran away. He was at Ondit on the 4th instant. He introduces himself to people by telling them he has lately arrived from America. He is now wearing a long dark overcoat, striped tweed trousers, and black hard hat. He slept in a deserted but in the locality for several nights before the murder, and his arrest is now extremely desirable.-0.4124. 18th March 1884.
