Originally published in 1914 by James Barkley Woodburn. This history is an extended survey of the people Woodburn calls the "Ulster Scot", who are by religion and background distinguished by him from the Anglo-Irish Episcopalians and the Irish Catholics.

He begins with a definition of the Ulster Scot and one of Ulster as is applies to the people he studied. He then proceeds to the Reformation of Ireland, Ulster before Plantations and the nature if the plantations and their purpose to the government. The role of the Presbyterians in Ireland during the turbulent days of the 17th century; the civil wars in Britain; Oliver Cromwell and the Restoration, on to 1688 and the struggle between the followers of the exiled Catholic King James VII and his nephew and son-in-law, the Presbyterian William III - all receive attention, as does the settlement after 1688 and conditions in Ireland during the early 18th century.
