Dickson studies five principal fortifications with each one examined in considerable detail as to its origin, evolution and family affiliations: Borthwick Castle and the Borthwick family; Craigmillar Castle and the Prestons and Gilmours; Roslin Castle and the St. Clairs; Crichtoun Castle and the Crichtoun, Ramsay and Hepburn families; and Cousland Castle and the Dalrymple family. There is extensive architectural and historical detail for each castle included here.
