The full title of this work is: "Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland: A Survey of Scottish Topography, Statistical, Biographical and Historical". This beautiful set of books, edited by Francis Groom and first published 1894, is a fantastically detailed topographical, biographical and historical account of every place in Scotland, from the tiniest Highland hamlet to the great cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. .

Without question, this is the most exhaustive and comprehensive geographical reference work available for genealogical or scholarly research. It is alphabetical in its listings, and it includes not only towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and parishes, but also castles, fortifications, tower houses, and mansions, both ancient and "modern" in the late 19th century. The descriptions are extensive and include geographical references which locate the site and provide the history and situation of towns, parishes, villages and shires, both in ancient and more recent times. In some cases, the material on a county or shire or on a prominent city like Perth, Edinburgh, or Glasgow will extend to as many as 10 pages of double-columned information.

The family information provided on mansions or castles likewise can be extremely helpful in genealogical research. This reference work is one which you will use time and time again.

To make the material more accessible, the maps have been extracted into separate files, and the text runs consecutively from A through Z.
