The Preface to this second editions starts off: 'The explorations of John McDouall Stuart may truly be said, without disparaging his brother explorers, to be amongst the most important in the history of Australian discovery'.

Stuart was the first to reach Australia's geographical centre and to traverse the continent. His expeditions were hampered by thirst, scurvy, starvation and hostile natives. He was a great leader, much admired by his men. His route led to the overland telegraph and the opening up of the centre.

This facsimile of the second edition of Stuart's Journals which were published in 1865 consist of his journals for the years 1858 through to 1862 wherein he 'fixed the centre of the continent, and successfully crossed it from sea to sea'.
