Dr David Keith Ballow was bom in Montrose Scotland in 1804. A descendant of the tenth Earl Marshal,
George Keith, Ballow studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Migrating to Australia he was appointed
initially a Colonial Surgeon to care for the convicts around Invermein (Scone). Transferred back to Sydney
he continued the same work there. Before being transferred to the convict settlement he married Margaret
Campbell in 1837.

The convict outpost was winding down when the Ballows arrived there in 1838. Upon its closure, Ballow
was appointed First Resident Surgeon at the Brisbane General Hospital (the former convict hospital). Ballow
became involved in every aspect of the life of Brisbane town (the former Moreton Bay).

Upon the arrival in 1850 of the ship “Emigrant” with a full load of passengers, many suffering from Typhus,
Ballow visited the newly established quarantine station at Dunwich on Stradbroke Island in his capacity of
Health Officer. Struck down with the disease himself he died and was buried there on the 29th September,
1850.

The circumstances of Ballow’s death makes him one of the significant figures in the history of medicine in
Queensland. He also has an historical link with the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane whose
antecedent was the Brisbane General Hospital where Ballow was the first resident surgeon.
