Directories are a fantastic resource for genealogists, social and local historians ... no they don't give you BDM details, but they can give you all the interesting information about a person and the place they lived once you have a name and location.
Wouldn't you like to find out that you ancestor was a general merchant, and find their advert together with what they sold, and the address of the shop? Or maybe they were a solicitor, so you can find their name, qualification, address and phone number if they had one. If they were a minister of religion you will find them listed under the religious denomination (Church of England, Wesleyan etc), together with the town they minister in. You might find that your relative was a member of the bicycle club, or that they were in the Brisbane Mounted Battery. The list goes on, and this is just a minute sample of the kind of information that a directory can give you. That isn't even going into the
Alphabetical or Street Directory, which lists householders, house-by-house.
This directory actually contains 15 directories, all in the one!! You get the following:
- Street Directory
- Suburban Directory
- Alphabetical Directory
- Trade and Professional Directory
- Government and Official Directory
- Institutions Directory
- Municipal Directory
- Ecclesiastical Directory
- Medical Directory
- Legal Directory
- Commercial Companies' Directory
