Published in 1882, Wanderings South and East is a descriptive record of four years travel by Walter Coote "in the less known Countries and Islands of the Southern and Eastern Hemispheres". The book is divided into four parts – the Australasian Colonies, the Pacific Islands, the Far East, and Spanish America.

The Australasian part covers Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, and Fiji discussing issues of the times – the “bush”, politics, emigration, missions, whaling, the various sights and more.

Part 2 describes his travels through Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, the New Hebrides, the Banks’ and Torres Islands, the Santa Cruz Islands, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands looking at the situation in each place and finishing with a discussion on the labour traffic between the islands and Queensland, Fiji and New Caledonia.

Of the labour traffic carried on so largely between the islands and Queensland, Fiji and New Caledonia, I may perhaps say a few words now. I do not wish to make invidious comparisons between these three centres of labour importation. I will merely say that in my own opinion the abuses are greatest in New Caledonia, for the reason that the French Government has not taken even so much as the insignificant interest in the subject that our own authorities have indulged in. The labour trade is in a bad state everywhere, whether under French flag or English, and what is said here on the subject applies equally to all the colonies to which natives are taken.

The third part covers the China Ports, Foochow and District, the Japanese ports and Kioto, the Nagasendo Road, and Nikko and Tokio whilst the final part describes travels through Spanish America – Central America, Peru, Chile, Monte Video and the Argentine Republic, and Brazil.
