Originally published 1889, this is a biographical sketch of the descendants of Charles and John Maclay, who went to America in 1734. The family seemingly possessed lands in the Highlands until the Battle of Bealligh-ac-Broig around 1275, when the lands they had held from the Earl of Ross were taken and the Maclays dispossessed. Seemingly the Maclays had rebelled against Ross and this was the cause of the subsequent battle. Thereafter they adhered to the Mackenzies, whom they long served.

The little that is known of this family is here included, and then the remainder of the book is devoted to the Maclays of Lurgan.

The Irish family was descended from Charles Maclay of County Antrim and from Maclays who settled in Ulster around 1625. The bulk of the book is concerned with the various branches of the family in North America, with extensive genealogical and historical information.

This CD consists of scans of the whole of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
