Written by William Watt, and published in 1900, this 456 page work is part of the Victorian attempt to present the history of the counties of Scotland, and this particular volume surveys two counties in the northeast.

It begins with chapters on the Celtic and Roman presence in the region, the Celtic Christian conversion and the Celtic Christian saints of the area, the Viking invasions, the beginning of the feudal period and the growth of towns and trade, down through the Reformation, the religious conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries, the Jacobite rebellions from 1688 through 1746, and on to the end of the 19th century. It proceeds, chapter by chapter, through the events and individuals who defined the region, with much information on such families as: Gordon, Keith, Irvine, Forbes, Durward, Cheney, Bysset, and Leslie, to cite but a few. This is a history of particular use to those seeking to understand the development of this more urban and trade-oriented region and of the growth of such important cities as Aberdeen.
