Written by Sir Andrew Agnew, Bart. of Lochaw "The Hereditary Sheriffs of Galloway: Their "Forebears" and Friends, Their Courts and Customs of Their Times" was originally published 1893. This CD is a facsimile of the 2nd enlarged edition which consists of 2 volumes.

The early history of Galloway is inseparable from that of Ayrshire, and this work therefore treats Galloway in its widest definition. It includes lands and families as far north as the river Irvine, as well as east to the Nith, and the region would later be defined as the counties of Wigtown and Kirkcudbright.

Volume One treats the history of the region to around 1650, and Volume Two picks up there and carries on into the 19th century. The Agnews, of course, figure prominently in this work, but it is more a history of the region than of one family. Among the families discussed in some detail are: Adair, Agnew, Baillie, Balliol, Blair, Boswell, Campbell, Carnegie, Crichton, Dalrymple, Douglas, Dunbar, Ferguson, Fleming, Gordon, Graham, Hamilton, Hay, Herries, Kennedy, McClellan, McDowall, McKie, Maxwell, Montgomery, Murray, Ross, Stewart, and Vaus.

This CD consists of scans of the whole of the original articles relating to this family, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
