Born in Penzance, Cornwall, England, Professor William Nicholas came to Australia in 1859 and joined his brother who was a senior inspector of mines in Victoria. However when the Coolgardie goldfield in Western Australia he headed west.

For about ten years he was connected with various English mining companies, including being manager of the Burbanks goldmine in Western Australia.

This publication which was originally published in 1895, as an idiosyncratic pamphlet was written to advise prospectors as to the geology and conditions of the new fields.
