This revised edition includes many new works from this western Pennsylvania/West Virginia region, settled in the 18th and 19th centuries by Scots-Irish who brought with them many words distinctive to their culture in Ireland, but reflective of Scottish Gaelic words as well. These mountain dialect words were collected, defined, and published by Henry Shoemaker in 1930, and it is from that collection that this selection is made. These words are often familiar ones, heard by all of us, and yet not recognized for their uniqueness to this region and their origin. This study provides the word and its meaning, as well as an etymological discussion of its origin.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
