So Harry set off in September 1852 from Plymouth at age 2½, with his parents and older sister Catherine, brother George and baby Tom, on the Parsee for Moreton Bay. They arrived on 10 January 1853 after what must have seemed to Harry a surreal experience over those 102 days. Although the passengers were apparently of exemplary behaviour, the crew had behaved badly throughout the voyage. The second officer threatened the captain's life and was placed in irons and eight seamen absconded near the mouth of the Brisbane River. Moreover, tragedy had struck the family during the voyage with the loss of little Tom, who had been baptized only weeks before they had left Plymouth ...
