Pugh's Directories of Queensland, the best known of the Queensland ones are hard to come by, but thanks to associations with various archives and lenders - these are being released for all to use.
Published by Theophilus Parsons Pugh, the Pugh's Almanac and Directories were published from 1866 through until 1927. This edition published in 1886, was it's 28th year of publication ... and was still 'the information book to have'. The full title says that is is an "Alamanc and Queensland Directory, Law Calendar, Goast Guide, Gazetteer and Men of the Time".
The Almanac part contains all the regular useful information such as a calendar, a diary of events for the year, Queensland parliamentary record, gardening calendar, government departments, even a listing of those in the legal profession, medical officers and practitioners, ministers of religion, surgeons, banks, masonic lodges, even the newspapers of the region including when each is issued etc. You will also find meteorological observations, postal information, population, ports and harbours, and so much more.
The Directory is more than useful too, listing not only a 'Country Directory' covering regional Queensland which lists the major towns listed alphabetically with the facilities available in each (ie. hospital, pastoral society etc), together with the trades and occupations of those living there - together with their name and address. The 'City of Brisbane Directory' covers both Brisbane city and suburbs.
The 'Men of the Time' section that has been added to the Pugh's Directories, but a very important one. As it lists notable men throughout Queensland at this time.
