'Prisoners of Australia: A Narrative' was written by Charlotte Anley, to the London Committee of the 'British Ladies' Prison Visiting Association'. Charlotte was commissioned by Mrs [Elizabeth] Fry to investigate the state of female prisoners at Parramatta. She was accompanied on those visits by Mr [Samuel] Marsden. Her vivid journal reports are from a Christian perspective and full of rich, descriptive language.

Divided into four chapters, the author describes her experiences of what she saw and learnt of the condition of the convict prisoners in the Colony of New South Wales around the period of 1836.

The book particularly focuses on the female prisoners and gives a brief outline of their moral condition and situation.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
