This book is divided into two sections, an Australian Almanac and a New South Wales directory for 1898, and combines invaluable information on places and people throughout New South Wales.
The Almanac is 160 pages in length and includes a detaile calendar as well as fixed and movable feasts, eclipses, the tides, holidays and more. This section also includes New South Wales government and departments, a law directory, military directory, ecclesiastical lists, educational establishments and lists for societies and public institutions as well as a detailed postal guide and list of postal towns and mail closing times.
The New South Wales directory contains a list of New South Wales towns of about 165 pages. Under each town is a description of the location, transport options and climate, its county names and population. Depending on the size and services of the town the following may also be listed:
- Brief description of the town
- Public Service list
- Medical information
- Societies and clubs (sports clubs, town bands, Progress Associations, School of Arts etc.)
- Commercial lists including auctioneers, bakers, builders, dressmakers, hairdressers etc.
- Shire councillors
Each of these lists includes to the name and positions of people involved.
