Sands and McDougall's (or 'Sands and Mac' as these directories have become known), primarily consist of a trade directory (listed both alphabetically by name, and by trade) for Melbourne and its suburbs. But also included is a Street directory giving details of heads of household street-by-street and covering Melbourne and its suburbs, and an Alphabetical directory, which is similar to a current day white pages, and lists the person's occupation instead of phone number.
You will also find a government and official directory, ecclesiastical and legal directory as well as a municipal directory, all of which include the names and positions of thousands of people which is useful for historians for finding or verifying information.
Consisting of over 1000 pages, the directory concludes with over 50 pages of advertisements - all useful insight, often including names of people, places and businesses long gone. This makes it useful not only for finding names, but also places occupations and other information for family and local historians.
A vast resource of information now readily available and easily searchable. The CD contains high quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
