Emigration from Germany to the Australian and New Zealand colonies went through a number of cycles. There were times when there was a strong demand for workers in the colonies when any willing worker could find employment, but these were all too soon followed by times of oversupply when the newly arrived immigrants struggled to find a position. In Germany too, there were factors that affected immigration.

Due to the large number of people emigrating from Germany, many of the current generation are now seeking to find out more about their German heritage.

A primary goal when researching people from Germany is to locate the places from which they originated. This is important because specific locations are needed in order to proceed further: to obtain civil or church records of births or baptisms, marriages, and deaths or burials, for example.

Unlike the Australian, New Zealand or British situation where births, deaths and marriages were recorded centrally, in Germany they were recorded and stored locally at the local Standesamt (civil registry office).

This book guides you through finding various records which will help in locating your ancestor's place of origin.

Haven't had time to make use of this booklet yet. However it seems an excellent publication and may help me overcome my brickwall.

I’m very new to doing German research as I’ve had a huge roadblock when it comes to my German connections. It’s been a very, very slow process but I’ve been chipping away at it slowly. I’d been put off with looking at these ancestors as I’d put them in the too hard basket. The hits I gained from the book “Organizing the Mountains of Paper” has also helped. As going through my old paper records I stumble across research notes which has given my hints on places to start this research. Hence me purchasing this book. There are lots of hints and useful tips. I do recommend this book if are starting out and you have German Ancestry. You don’t need to have your head buried in the sand anymore. I’ve been able to locate Australian shipping records and have other points to check now. Hence me also purchasing the magazine “Tracing Your Germanic Ancestors” (see separate review).

This booklet is very informative and after the background blurb discusses Shipping, Birth, Death and Marriage certificates, Emigration records, including Emigration Indexes; he talks about the Danish Emigration Database with the website address, the Swiss Overseas Emigration 1910 – 1953; then Immigration records, Naturalisation records etc. Obituries, and an extensive section of Maps and Gazeteers with again many illustrations. He also briefly talks about Resolving difficulties. The bibliography is 2.5 pages listing all sorts of fun stuff that you can look up at your leisure to help with your search!
This booklet is easy to read and has a comprehensive amount of information. I can definately recommend getting hold of your own copy if you find it useful. There is lot to take in!
