Originally published in 1858 by the Rev. John B. Pratt, this 451 page work is frequently has been cited as one of the best local histories ever written, and certainly it contains an amazing amount of material of all sorts related to this region of Scotland. Buchan was an ancient thanedom, and originally it extended from the Don to the Deveron; but it later was reduced to the region defined by the Don and the Ythan. Aberdeenshire would be the larger framework into which it fitted, for Mar and Buchan were its two major divisions.

This study moves through the region area by area, and each chapter therefore is devoted to one section of the larger area and to the physical characteristics, the customs, families, people and places which define it. The extensive appendices provide a vast amount of additional material, including substantial information on the Hays of Erroll.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
