As You Were: with the Australian Services at Home and Overseas from 1788 to 1948 is the third volume of the As You Were series published by the Australian War Memorial. The fifty-nine stories are all contributed by service and ex-service personnel.

Again, the titles of the stories convey the wide range of material covered – a selection includes Sunday Morning in Japan, Sojourn in Papua, Espionage - Theirs and Ours, Off to the Sudan, To Coolies and Prisoners of War, New Views of an Old A.G.H., The Army in Australia in "The Roarin' Days", Kure Was Thrashed, The Corvette's Kill, Wellington Meets Blucher, Jungle Business, A Queer Convoy in the Pacific, The Occupation, Reverie in Hiroshima, Nip Infanteer, Knighthood on the Quarter-Deck, and Australians on the Holy Mountain.

The Army in Australia in "The Roarin' Days" looks at the military in Australia between 1821 and 1870. At the end of the story there is a Regimental Roll giving a brief summary of the British Regiments garrisoned in the various Australian colonies.

During this period of fifty years, twenty-five Imperial regiments, whether as whole regiments or battalions thereof, were assigned one after another to garrison the penal colonies which, as Sydney and Hobart were transit ports for regiments going out to India from home service in England or from other parts of the Empire, were regarded as ideal toughening-up ground for the sterner work ahead. However, their role here of provosts and convict guards was not an inspiring one, and they relieved the boredom with more attention to rum and the women of the town than to their military duties, so that, with few exceptions, notable amongst them being the 40th Regiment, things did not work out as planned.

The book contains many illustrations and images, both colour and black and white, of battlefields, equipment, personnel and some of the more light hearted moments. It is a valuable resource and a great read for all interested in military history.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book, bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
