This extensive history of the county of Peeblesshire and of the town and parish of Peebles thoroughly investigates the evolution and development of this small district over the course of more than 2,000 years. It begins with the Roman era, detailing the numerous Roman features of the region, including camps, roads, forts, towns, etc. The Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Danish eras likewise provide material for chapters on the place-names which come from those waves of settlers; the history continues with an account of the families who came into the region over the course of many centuries. In particular, it concentrates upon the Tweedie, Geddes, Hay , Baird, Murray, Veitch, Stewart, Horsburgh, Tait, Purvis, and Cockburn families. It is a study which provides information on the role of these great families in this particular region.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
