Following in the tradition commenced with The Anzac Book, Soldiering On tells the story of the Australian Army during 1942. All stories are contributed by members of the Australian Army (referenced by their Army number) "prepared in the field in brief hours off duty, often by the flickering light of a hurricane lamp in a blacked-out camp and sometimes within hearing of the front-line guns".
At the time the forces were engaged in the Middle East and South-West Pacific. To 1941's "Egypt, Palestine, Libya, Greece, Crete and Syria must now be added Ceylon, Malaya, Java, Timor, New Guinea and the Northern Territory of Australia".
The book is in six sections, the stories listed are representative only:
- Christmas in the Holy Land Star Over Bethlehem
- Great Britain Diggers in Britain
- Malaya Malayan Campaign, Jungle Ambush, Malayan First Night
- Middle East Meet the Padre, The Beirut Bazaar, Arab Justice, Libyan Night, War in the Western Desert
- The Voyage Home Mosques Behind - Home Ahead
- South-West Pacific War in New Guinea
This history of the Malayan campaign gives a vivid impression of the land fighting . It omits circumstances leading up to the first act of war and finishes at the point where Singapore was surrendered and a thousand Allied troops were left armed to maintain order in the city.
The book contains many images and sketches, both colour and black and white, of personnel, maps and places. It is a valuable resource and a great read for all interested in military history.
