SAMPLE ENTRY (from the 11 January 1896 issue):

£2,000 REWARD.
Colonial Secretary's Office, Brisbane, 23rd July, 1895.
HIS Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, has been pleased to direct that a Reward of £2,000 be paid for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons who, on the 16th of July instant, introduced poison into the food supplied to the men engaged as shearers at Bowen Downs Station, and that a Free Pardon be granted to any person concerned in the crime, not being the principal offender, who shall give such information.

Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.
