Directories and almanacs are a valuable source of information for local, family and social historians as well as researchers in other fields of history. They are an extremely useful tool for establishing when and where a person lived. However this is just a starting point. Look further in the directory to find out more information about the society in which they lived, the occupation they held and the people they knew.

The Pugh's Queensland directories have been published annually since 1858. And as Queensland and its population grew, so did the size of the directories.

The 1885 edition has  over 650 pages, and covers Brisbane city and suburbs, and Queensland country. This would have been a valuable guide at the time, with information such as a calendar of events, committee lists, governors, telegraph, postal, shipping and railway information, tariffs and stamp duties, tide tables and meteorological information. Checking directories and almanacs is useful to understand what life was like, and what services were available in any region at the time. Understanding the social history and events of the time, is just as important as finding the names and dates.

A feature of this year is the "Men of the Time" section - biographies of prominent Queenslanders.

The primary sections of the directory are the:

  • Brisbane and Suburban streets directory: arranged alphabetically by occupation, contains persons name and address.
  • Country Towns directory: contains details of various towns, with a brief description of each, and details of the services and trades in the town, together with the names of those who run them. Covers: Adavale, Allora, Aramac,Beenleigh, Blackall, Bowen, Bundaberg, Burdekin (Lower), Burketown, Cairns, Cardwell, Charleston, Charters Towers, Charleville, Clermont, Cloncurry, Cooktown, Copperfield, Cunnamulla, Dalby, Dungeness, Emerald, Gayndah, Georgetown, Geraldton (Johnstone River), Gladstone, Goodna, Goondiwindi, Gregory, Gympie, Herberton, Hughenden, Ingham, Ipswich, Kingsborough, Mackay, Maryborough, Maytown, Millchester, Mitchell, Mount Britton, Mount Perry, Normanton, Port Douglas, Ravenswood, Richmond, Rockhampton, Roma, Sandgate, Southport, Springsure, Stanthorpe, St George, St Lawrence, Surat, Tambo, Thargomindah, Thornborough, Thursday Island, Tiaro, Toowoomba and Drayton, Toowong, Townsville, Warwick, Watsonville, and Winton.
  • Stations in Settled and Unsettled Districts: contains details of each station, district, nearest post-town, and owners names.

This is a useful source of information for those researching persons or regions of Queensland in the 1880s.
