This history, gazetteer and directory comprising a general survey of the county and Diocese of Carlisle was originally published in 1847. Il is the first major work of its type devoted exclusively Io Cumberland. It was published at a time of great social change in England.

The effects of the Industrial Revolution were starting to be felt and the dawn of a new Railway Age was beginning to reshape the county.
