This work provides a detailed examination of what it meant to live or on the border between England and Scotland in the period before 1603.
The author sought to show the causes for Border reiving, the degree or extent to which Border lawlessness developed and prevailed, and the means used by the English and Scottish governments of the day to suppress and control it. He sought to illustrate how the reiver system worked in the face of governmental opposition, and finally he wanted to illustrate how the conditions which allowed for reiving finally were eliminated. Given the number of Border counties, there obviously were numerous reiver families, many of them particular to only one region. These families are discussed, and the feuds between and among them recounted, and then the way in which these families were brought under control is detailed.
