As You Were: A cavalcade of events with the Australian Services from 1788 to 1947, "adds another volume to the story of the Australian Navy, Army and Air Force which was continued in As You Were 1946 from the volumes published during the First and Second World Wars". The sixty-seven stories in the volume are again the work of service and ex-service personnel.
As with the previous book, the stories cover life in the services over a wide range of years. One story is accompanied by photographs taken in 1890 at a camp of a detachment of the New South Wales Permanent Artillery one of Australias oldest regiments. There is a further story on the 'Sudan Days' along with photographs of the contingent on their last parade at Moore Park and embarking at Circular Quay. One more recent tale, Conquest at Canungra, tells how the AIF re-created all the hardships of the Kokoda Trail and Shaggy Ridge in their jungle warfare camp and put some RAAF-ers through the trial and prepared for a laugh.
Let some of the titles tell the story of the book The Colourful Past, A Cheeky Action at Endau Bay, The Army in Australia Before Waterloo, A Torokina Hand-Over, The Battle of Macquarie Point, Closing Loopholes, Off the Beeton Track on the Burma-Siam Railroad, I Lived in an Igloo, The Songs We Sang, First Day in Civvy Street, A Night in the Mediterranean, Catalina on a Mission, Journey to Alexandria, I Meet the Sultan, and The Battle of Wadi Ya Rekn.
The book contains many illustrations and images, both colour and black and white, of battlefields, equipment, personnel and some of the more light hearted moments. It is a valuable resource and a great read for all interested in military history.
