This is "the first of a new series of post-war Service volumes which will provide a contemporary record of developments in the Australian Navy, Army, and Air Force". The As You Were series completed the series of books produced during the Second World War by the Australian War Memorial. The contents of the book are again the work of service and ex-service men and women and the views expressed are those of the writers unlike the volumes published during the war, the authors of these contributions are named.
Apart from stories relating to the recently completed war, others tell of campaigns in the Boxer Rebellion, the South African War, and the 1914-1918 war. The First Diggers tells the story of the Sudan Contingent:
In 1885, a tiny force of 750 soldiers left Australia to fight beside English troops in the Sudan, the first colonial volunteer force raised for service overseas. These were the first Diggersthe New South Wales Contingent.
The titles are intriguing Sword Expert of Kure, Spies on the Tableland, Australian Victory March, Shock Treatment, Timor Evacuation, Capture of Damascus, The First Diggers, Lancaster Crew, When Sydney Fought a Zeppelin, Borneo Incident, Occupation Force in Japan, RAAF in Japan, Cloak-and-Dagger Catalinas, General Adachi Said .., Kamikaze Kids, Blood Bath at Cowra, The Incredible Howe Hoax, and more.
The book contains many illustrations and images, both colour and black and white, of battlefields, equipment, personnel and some of the more light hearted moments. It is a valuable resource and a great read for all interested in military history.
