So you've heard of Police Gazettes? But just what are they? These were weekly
publications which were distributed among the Police Force, and included
information on all sorts of happenings within the state of New South Wales.
Far from being just a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for
local, family and social historians, these Police Gazettes contain details and
information that can not be found anywhere else. As well as listing those in the
police force with promotions, resignations, commendations etc, you will find
information on courts lists, arson, murders, deserters, lists of those arrested
and discharged, warrants issued, escaped prisoners, missing persons, and
listings of stolen items (and from whom). Notices from police gazettes from
other states are also often included.
A fascinating read for learning about the social history of the time, even if
you don't have family there - this CD contains all issues that were produced in
1920.

Deserters from His Majesty's Service
From H.M.A.S. "Cerberus" at Williamston, on the 12th October, 1920
Albert Hancock Robinson, able seaman, born in England, 23 years of age, 5
feet 3 inches high, black hair, brown eyes, dark complexion.
from H.M.A.S. "Sydney" at Sydney, on the 4th October, 1920
George Reginald Lewis Burgess, stoker second class, born in New South Wales,
18 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, medium complexion, dark hair, hazel
eyes.
A reward not exceeding £6 and expenses will be paid for the apprehension of
the abovenamed deserter.

Patrick John Egan, telegraphist, born in New South Wales, 20 years of age, 5
feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on
left arm.
Jack Rowland Windsor, stoker, born in New South Wales, 21 years of age, 5
feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, scar above
second joint of third left finger.
Harry Raymond Mantova, stoker, born in New South Wales, 18 years of age, 5
feet 10 1/4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyes, scar on
leg.
