The actual title of this work is "A Popular Monograph on the Origin and History of the Nomenclature of the Present and Former Times" written by Harry Alfred Long, and published in 1883, this 364 page book is now available as a facsimile of CD-ROM.
This extended study of personal and family names provides an account of the origin and meaning of literally thousands of names used or found throughout the British Isles. It begins with chapters on the origin and formation of words, then moves on to personal names, Biblical names, birth names, names of women, local names, German mythological names, names from animals, war names, and trade or occupational names. The index is both comprehensive and extensive, and allows the reader easily to locate names in which he or she is interested.
This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
