Description

Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.

The Police Gazettes contain details on more than just members of the Police Force, or criminals, you will also find:
  • appointments of Registrars of BDM, Powder Magazine Keepers, Crown Land Bailiffs, Public Vaccinators and Health Officers, and Electoral Inspectors
  • apprehensions
  • auctioneer, hawker, marine store licences
  • deaths of retired police and recipients of police pensions
  • escapees and absconders from custody
  • funds paid to recipients of police pensions
  • lost or stolen property and victims of crime
  • deserters from wives, families, etc
  • deserters from military service
  • deserters from merchant vessels
  • inquests
  • medical practitioners
  • missing friends
  • persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued
  • police appointments
  • prisoners discharged from gaols
  • victims of crime
You can expect the Victoria Police Gazettes to include names with each entry, and sometime private details (age, height etc), photographs, addresses and occupations.
