The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.
The New South Wales Government Gazette of 1864 contains:

Example entry: In the Supreme Court of New South Wales. ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION. In the goods of Franz Kuss, late of the Lachlan, in the Colony of New South Wales, miner, deceased. NOTICE is hereby given, that at the expiration of fourteen days from the publication of this notice, application will be made to this Honorable Court, in its Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, that administration of the goods , chattels, credits and effects of the abovenamed Franz Kuss, in the Colony of New South Wales, may be granted to George Penkivil Slade, of 142, Pitt-street, Sydney, in the said Colony, Esquire, an attorney appointed for that purpose by Johann Baptist Kuss, of Furtwangen, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, saddler, father and one of the next of kin of the said deceased. Dated this thirty-first day of Decembet, A.D. 1863.
