This ancient Aberdeenshire family is the subject of this extended historical
and genealogical work. Originally published 1887 and edited by William F. Skene,
the extensive manuscripts of the family provided the author with more, rather
than less, material, beginning roughly in the early 14th century and continuing
to the time of publication.
It provides information on the families of Skene of Skene, Skene of Halyards
in Fife, Skene of Pitlour, Skene of Prerau in Austria, and Skene of Dumbreck, of
Newtyle, of Dyce, of Westercourse, of Ramore, of Curriehill, of Halyards in
Midlothian, of Belhelvie, and of Rubislaw. These branches are treated in both
historical and genealogical terms, with appendices of illustrative documents
relating to them.
