The rapid rise of the town of Greenock was due primarily to its
location relative to the Firth of Clyde and the city of Glasgow. Its
earlier history involved the Shaws, the Houstons, and the Nocolsons of
Carnock, The first portion of this history is devoted to those and
other families resident in the region. As the town grew, its churches,
schools, and public buildings reflected the growth of this town on the
edge of Glasgow's great expansion. The history of the town in the 18th
and early 19th centuries therefore is the primary focus of the work.
