This compilation will serve as a useful tool for researchers, saving the need to leaf through numerous gazettes.

Listing over 5000 entries, these names have been matched to gazette years and pages. Set out in an entry-by-entry format the information listed for each is: Surname, First Name/s, Date of Death, Date of Gov Gaz, Page No, Cause of Death, Place of Death, Notice to Reg, Inquest, Occupation, Age, Alternate Name/s, Other Sources, Death Registration, Burial, Place of Origin.

In many instances names reported differ from the death registration entry and where appropriate, a cross reference has been made.

Deaths in South Australia and the Northern Territory were published in the South Australian Government Gazettes from the early days of settlement. The majority of names in the list have been compiled from police returns, including Police Mortuary Returns. The returns were stated to include all persons without relations, known or resident in SA or NT, who died, or were found dead in any public place and about which the police could furnish any information. The reports also include references to inquests.

Added to the list are names of deceased who died in incidents for which only some deaths were published: i.e. the wreck of the 'Clan Ranald' , for which which six deaths were reported and forty registered.

Northern Territory reported deaths in the gazettes ceased when the governance of the Territory  was transferred to the Commonwealth Government on 1 January 1911.
