'Enquire Within Upon Everything', first published in 1856, was an early how-to book for domestic life during Victorian times. By the time this, the 68th edition, was published in 1884 over 900,000 copies of the book had been sold.
This edition provided advice on over 2,500 topics such as parlour games, etiquette, recipes, business, sanitary precautions, and medications – there is information on how to dye hair and feathers green, laying out a table, killing cockroaches, removing freckles, matrimony, narcotic poisons, the utility of singing, how to get sleep, feather beds for children and much, much more. It makes interesting reading and gives an insight into the lives of families at the time.
