The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.

Some items of interest in the 1897 Gazette are: Contracts for the supply of forage, Land Tax Register and Valuation for Victoria, Classified Roll of State School Teachers, list of Licensed Surveyors, lists of Auctioneers’ General Licenses, a notice regarding the Salt Junk Mining Company, appointments of Visiting Chaplains to Gaols, Roll of Merchants and Traders, Roll of Underwriters, Roll of Ship Owners, Roll of Pilots, Roll of Engineers, Roll of Masters and Roll of Seamen.

THE Administrator of the Government, with the advice of 1 the Executive Council, has been pleased to appoint The Reverend MERVYN M. WHITTON to be Acting Visiting Chaplain of the Church of England Denomination to the Gaol at Bendig,o, from the 1st November, 1896, vice the Reverend J. Garlick deceased.
