| Published in three volumes, from 1903-1912, this massive study of the Gordons in
Scotland is a testimony to the importance of this great noble family which for
centuries played such a major role in the national life and politics of
Scotland.
Given the size of the extended Gordon line with its many cadet branches, the
problem was how to proceed.
The author begins with an extended bibliography of Gordon genealogy, working
from earliest times toward the 19th century and examining all primary materials
with Gordon information. The Gordons of Abergeldie, of Coclarachie, and of Gight
is followed by extensive lists of Gordons in Scotland, including services of
heirs, poll lists and registers of colleges.
Volume 2 continues with the inclusion of additional primary sources and with
the genealogical and historical accounts of the Gordons of Lesmoir and the cadet
lines of Crichie, Birkenburn, Terpersie, Leichestoun, and Newton, plus an
examination of the Gordons in ballads. Volume 3 concludes with a biographical
muster roll of Gordon officers in all areas of the military in Europe and
America, as well as in Great Britain. The work overall is a substantial
historical and genealogical study of the Gordons from many different
aspects.
