This two-part history of the Gunns in Scotland and the United States
originated with the author's service in Europe during World War I and
his introduction to soldiers and officers in Scottish Highland
Regiments who were from regions of northern Scotland inhabited by
members of the extended Gunn family.
The first (and shorter) portion of
the book is devoted to background information on the origins of the
Gunns, the lands they held in Scotland, and the traditions and customs
of the Highland Scots as they evolved over the centuries.
The second part details the history and genealogy of those of the Gunn Clan
who settled in the Unites States. There are chapters on the New England Gunns;
the Virginia Gunns; William, George and Richard Gunn, who served in the
Revolutionary War; the Gunns of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi; and
finally, Gunns from other parts of the country. The material relating
to the United States is heavily genealogical, with extended family
lines down into the first half of the 20th century. Overall, this
history provides an extended view of the origins and history of the
Gunns in Scotland, and as well contains extensive genealogical material
on a large number of those who settled in the US.
